CHRIS' STORY.
In February of 2019, 17 month old Christopher Ryan Milecki was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer, named Acute Megakaryoblastic Leukemia. Over the next seven months, Chris would endure multiple rounds of chemotherapy, two brain surgeries, radiation and a bone marrow transplant. Chris fought HARD, and at the end of the course of his treatment, his family and supporters were elated to learn that he was in remission!
However, his doctors and family knew that with Chris’ specific type of cancer, relapse was not only a possibility, but likely. In July of 2020 (just one month short of the anniversary of his bone marrow transplant), Chris and his family received the gut-wrenching news no one wanted. His cancer was back.
The next three months were a whirlwind of stronger chemotherapies and more dangerous treatments. This combination of therapies left Chris in a battle for his life-literally-as the toxins damaged his liver, kidneys, lungs and heart. Chris was placed on a ventilator, undergoing dialysis and put in an induced coma. The following weeks were filled with the scariest moments of all their lives.
Against all odds, Chris’ vitals began to improve. And three weeks after the coma began, he took his first breath on his own. His parents would learn moments later that not only was Chris going to be ok, but that he was in remission. Today, (almost five years later) Chris is 8 years old and remains cancer free.
“A miracle shot doesn’t happen because the course is easy. It happens because someone refuses to stop swinging.”
